These techniques are essential for everyone to learn. They helped me to get better at painting skies as well as the sea. They guarantee you to have success as in the improvement of your artistic skills.

Sometimes I feel frustrated that the painting in watercolor that I have in my head did not turn out to be the same way in reality. It just feels too annoying and you feel like you are the worst artist in the world.

By having experience in art for over 4 years, I now know that it is a sign to go back to basics.

Recently I went to the beach with my friends and we wanted to paint the beach together in watercolor. I was the one to teach them how. As I explained to them and have seen great progress and results in their works I understood that these tips can be useful for more people than just my friends

We are going to learn about lifting, scraping and washing watercolors.

This exercise is the most important because you will learn a variety of ways to remove paint while it is at the different stages of drying, and then after it had finally dried.

It is a great way to do different effects when drawing landscapes as well as portraits.

Step 1:Take a piece of watercolor paper and put tape all around the corners. Then mix a handful of water and paint . Basically, start by washing in grey the watercolor paper.

Technique #1Dab with a tissue to take paint out of the piece of paper. This is great for using when drawing clouds or sea.

Technique #2Rinse then squeeze out the brush. Use it to soak up the paint and create a lighter area. This technique is great for when using to highlight something, for example, let’s say you made are too dark in a painting, do this and it will save you from ruined paintings.

Technique #3Use a knife blade to scrape out paint while it is wet. A pro tip is that interesting marks occur when the paint is scraped from a wet area into a dry one.I am still mastering this technique, so good luck:) This one does create interesting marks but my first attempt ever when I tried it, my scraps turned out a darker color of the paint rather than lighter.

Technique #4Use a sprayer to squirt away some of the wet paint is washed away from the surface of the picture. If necessary angle the board so that the paint is washed away from the surface of the picture. This can also when the painting has dried. Then wipe the soaked area with a tissue. It is great when painting clouds and you forgot to leave that white space.

Technique #5When the paint is nearly dry, try wiping away the lowest corner. Wiping it hard with a very dry, very clean tissue will slightly abrade the surface and may even create of white paper beneath. It creates this nice touch to the painting.

Technique #6This process is a modern variant of the traditional masking. Lay two strips of Magic Tape across the dry surface, but leave a small thin line which is exposed to paper. The exposed strip is then brushed away by wetting water on it., and then the paint can be lifted by wiping away with a dry tissue.

Technique #7Now scratch a crisp defined line against a ruler with a razor. A razor in a safety guard, a pocket knife or a small tool like a flat screwdriverAs a result, now you have piece/s of paper where you have experimented with different ways to remove paint, but it is now a great cheat sheet to look back on when stuck painting landscapes.

My tip to you now is to experiment with this, practice these techniques so when you go on Plein air, or just painting whatever you wish, you will be ready with basics to create a masterpiece.By the way, did you know that all of these experiments you can show them if you are doing GCSE or A-Levels Art? This is really something that gets you higher marks.
