Hi everyone! My name is Jess, nurse, medical student and travel enthusiast! I love packing my backpack and thinking of my next journey with my fiance ed.

Airlines these days often stipulate an extra charge for a suitcase to go in the hold. Often as much as £30-£55 for one case one way and although your ticket and flight may be as little as £30 it could cost you £140 if you want a suitcase too. Recently me and ed travelled to Majorca for a nice little beach holiday and only took hand luggage. I was surprised at how much you could take in a small hand luggage size suitcase. See my experience and what I would do differently.

When reading before we went, on both Easyjet and Ryanair they stipulated up to 10 bottles per person for only 100ml bottles. You may think 10 bottles is quite a lot, and I certainly did before I packed, and where you add them up you take more than you think. I used to take a factor 30, 20 maybe a 15 and a 10 sun creams but I only took a 15 this time, this was one bottle split into 2 small 100ml bottles too. If you have contact lenses you need the solution to keep them in, sprays are often officially liquid before you spray then e.g dry shampoo, deodorant, if you take moisturiser, any makeup and already you’ve reach 10 bottles. I never read anywhere but it was airport policy that all the bottles had to fit in 1 sandwich bag, therefore couldn’t fit 10 bottles in. We therefore had a bit of a problem going through security as it didn’t matter how many bottles but they had to fit in one sandwich bag that could be sealed and eds mum who came too had to throw some things away.

Although we took sun cream and thought it was completely necessary, the 2 bottles of sun cream we took were used in a day and a half. When at the beach you put sun cream on before you go and reapply lots during the day, or so you should! We therefore bought 2 more bottles of sun cream while we were there and it definitely wasn’t worth taking sun cream when travelling with hand luggage when you can buy a big bottle for 8euros when you get there from the supermarket. We also ran out of after sun and had to get more after 4 days.

Therefore, suggest just buying sun cream and after sun when you get there which frees up more space for necessary liquids, or more clothes!

Before I go away to a beach holiday I always buy a new beach towel. Once you’ve used one I think they go weird even after you wash them when you get home and its always nice to buy something new. Every supermarket and shop abroad sells beach towels for the same price or cheaper than at home, they also take up a fair amount of space in your hand luggage suitcase. Space that could be used to take more clothes and prevent having to spend that extra money paying for hold luggage.

Whilst some airlines say its 10kg for hand luggage others just state a size of hand luggage. Travelling to Majorca we didn’t have ours measured or weighed but some airports do, especially if you haven’t checked in online. Heavy shoes such as wedges or big sandals are weighty as well as they take up a lot of space. I would suggest if you’re wanting to take heavier shoes or clothing then wear them to travel in, then you’re taking up much less space in your small suitcase too.

I’m not sure about in other countries, but in Britain it seems to be if you travel somewhere for 7 days you’ll take about 10 pairs of underwear meaning an extra 3 pairs. Its quite funny when you think really have you ever weed or pooed yourself at home? Then why would you do it abroad? It was ed that pointed it out and it was quite hilarious that everyone does it all of the time. If you’re wearing a bikini or swim suit all day you won’t even wear underwear for that long amount of time

Putting your luggage in the hold for free

How to Use Hand Luggage Only!

Its becoming more and more popular to only take hand luggage due to extortionate costs for hold luggage which is easily more than your actual flight sometimes. And in the plane, there are only so many lockers above the seats. Multiple airlines now just before you board the plane, are taking your luggage and then putting it in the hold for free, or even if they look your luggage is slightly too big, they’ll put it in the hold anyway right then without having to waitat baggage drop off or paying such an extra amount.

I heard a lot about rolling your clothes from different people over the years but i was never entirely sure on doing it. But once id done it i will never go back to just lying it all on top of each other. Suitcases have indents where the handles are and things like that and by rolling your clothes you can fit them into smaller gaps. By doing this you can therefore take more clothes!

I used to always take a 22kg suitcase or how much the airline said I could take, I just find it totally unnecessary, the amount of stuff you can buy there, and the amount of clothes you can fit into a suitcase appropriate for hand luggage is a lot more than you may think. I got everything I wanted to take and more in mine including; 3 pairs of shoes, 7 tops, 4/5 pairs of shorts, a dress, 3 bikini, makeup, underwear, a hat, bumbag, 6 bottles, some makeup, travel plugs and more! I can’t imagine paying for hold luggage again, such an easier way of travelling and cheaper too!
