Ten Things to do in Kefalonia

The Greek Island of Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands and is the perfect place for those looking for sunshine, scenery and some Greek culture. It is only in the last few years it has started to become a popular summer destination and with good reason – there are so many things to do in Kefalonia!

We spent ten days on this fabulous island last summer and fell in love with it immediately, it has beautiful beaches, stunning mountains and an abundance of colourful doors . The great thing about Kefalonia is although it is becoming touristy it has yet to be completely overtaken by sun seekers so you can easily enjoy some peace and quiet! Here are ten things to do in Kefalonia this summer:

Hire a car and drive through the mountains.

Public transport in Kefalonia is practically non-existent and taxis can be hard to come by so hiring a car is the easiest way to get round the island. The benefit of having your own transport is that you can take a drive around the mountains and get some fantastic views of the coast. Seriously, there are some amazing views and you will probably see a fair few mountain goats too! We used Greekstones to hire our car and would highly recommend them! Take a trip to the fishing town of Fiskardo

Ten Things to do in Kefalonia

Up in the north of Kefalonia is the small fishing village of Fiskardo which is the only place to remain intact after the earthquake of 1953 and it is a little stunner. Take a drive there and spend the day exploring the cute shops before treating yourself to lunch at one of the many restaurants along the seafront. There is something so beautiful and quaint about this little town, it is like going back in time and everything is so colourful. You can read more about Fiskardo .

Don’t forget to stop off at Assos too!

On your way to Fiskardo make sure you stop at Assos, a beautiful little town full of colourful flowers and pretty buildings. The town is surround by some stunning coastline and mountains and although it is a really small town it is well worth taking a couple of hour out of your day to explore it. There are a couple of places where you can grab a beer and sit and admire the scenery.

Go turtle spotting in Argostoli

One of my favourite things to do in Kefalonia is to watch the turtles in Argostoli. Every morning as the fishing boats come back into the harbour lots of turtles come along too, looking for scraps of fish. You are pretty much guaranteed to see these beauties splash around but make sure you get there around 9ish when there are less people around. Afterwards you should head to one of the many cafes and grab some breakfast and a Greek coffee. Read more about the Turtles of Argostoli .

Unlike the mainland wine, Retsina, Kefalonian wine is lovely. If you have time you should definitely go on a wine tasting tour ) to learn more about the wine making in Kefalonia and explore the vineyards of Robola. If you don’t go on a wine tour at least makes sure you stop off at Divino Winery in Pessada which is an experience in itself! Read more about our wine tasting adventures .

This beach was made famous by the film Captain Corelli’s Mandolin and is by far the most popular beach in Keafalonia. Despite the tourists it is definitely worth visiting this beautiful beach which it’s white sand and vivid blue Mediterranean sea. You could spend a couple of hours catching some rays and taking a dip in the sea before driving on up to Assos. If sunbathing isn’t your cup of tea then there are plenty of photo’s spots of the beach from the road for you to grab a quick picture.

Sami is a lovely town on the north-east coast of Kefalonia. The town has several bars and cafes along the promenade and it is a really nice place to go for a bite to eat while watching the boats come in and out of the bay. We preferred going in the morning when the town still felt sleepy but really any time of day is a good time to visit Sami. Find out more about the town of .

The Melissani cave is absolutely gorgeous and a must see for anyone visiting Kefalonia. It is a geological phenomenon created by water entering the rocks, eroding them and creating hollows. It costs about 7 euros to enter the cave and it is a short walk down to where Melissani lake where you will be taken on a short boat ride. The water there is SO BLUE and unlike anything I have seen before. Make sure you get there around 9ish before all the coaches arrive full of tourists. Find out more about .

Skala is probably the place where most people stay in Kefalonia, it has the best night life and is full of bars and restaurants. It is by no means a party town but it is definitely worth staying if drinking and eating are high on your agenda. Like all the other towns it is right by the beach and there are plenty of sun loungers available to rent. Make sure you catch happy hour at Akri seaside bar .

Ten Things to do in Kefalonia

Finally one of the best things things to do in Kefalonia is to just relax. Kefalonia, is a quiet island and as I mentioned before it is still not a massive tourist destination so it is the perfect place to just chill out by the pool or beach and enjoy the beauty of this lovely island.
